Benue State House of Assembly has asked the state Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia to appear before the Executive Session of the House to brief members on the security situation in the State.
House took the decision after the member representing Logo State Constituency, Hon. Samuel Jiji moved a motion on matter of public importance calling on the state government and security agencies to curtail unprovoked attacks and killings in Logo, Gwer West Local Government Areas and other communities in the state by Herdsmen during Monday Plenary held at the hearing hall, Benue State House of Assembly, Makurdi.
While condemning the unprovoked attacks and killings in Logo, Gwer West and other part of the state, the House called on security agencies, to as a matter of urgency, provide adequate security to protect lives and property of the people of Logo, Gwer West and other parts of the state. It urged the state government to rise up to the Paramount responsibility of protecting lives and property of its citizens.
The House requested the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to immediately provide palliative to alleviate the sufferings of the affected people and directed the management of Benue Links to resume transportation services on the Makurdi-Naka route as well as security agencies to ensure protection of lives and property on the road.
Seconding the motion, Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Peter Ipusu expressed dismay over the unprovoked attacks and killings in the state by armed herders and asked the state government inaugurate the State Civil Protection Guards to complement the efforts of the conventional security agencies in the state.
Supporting the motion, members representing Gwer West, Adoka/Ugboju, Gboko East, Gwer and Okpokwu State Constituencies, Hons Solomon Gyila, Michael Audu, Beckie Orpin, Elias Audu and Anthony Agom, expressed worries on the incessant attacks and killings in the state by armed herders.
They noted that, the armed herders have made the routes from Makurdi, the State capital to Naka, Agagbe to Naka Town in Gwer West Loal Government and other roads in the state unpassable while many communities in the state are deserted for fear of attacks.
Earlier, the mover of the motion, Hon. Jiji explained that, there is continue attacks and killing of innocent souls by armed herders particularly at Ayilamo and other parts of the area, saying many lives are already lost and most of the communities deserted for fear of the unknown.
Hon. Jiji appealed to the state government and particularly the security agencies to do the needful in order to protect lives and property of the people.
