Niger State House of Assembly has called for an upward review of pension paid to retired civil servants in the state in order to improve their social and economic wellbeing.
This followed a motion moved by the member representing Edati Constituency, Ahmed Muhammed during plenary on Tuesday.
The lawmaker explained that according to the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria as amended, pension shall be reviewed every five years or together with any state civil service salary review.
Ahmed noted that some retirees are still receiving three thousand naira as monthly pensions in the state, describing the condition of the retirees as pathetic.
He said that most of the affected retirees were in precarious conditions, adding that, they sacrificed their lives and services for the state.
Also speaking, member representing Tafa Constituency, Muhammad Sani Idris stressed the need for the state government to put in place mechanism for the upward review of pension in the state to cushion the economic hardship being faced by retirees who have work meritoriously for the development of the state.
