A non-governmental organisation of persons with disabilities, Hope Alive for Possibilities Initiative (HAPI), and the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) have commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for approving and forwarding of the Disability Bill to the Benue State House of Assembly for onward passage.
The NGOs are calling on the state legislature to expedite action and ensure the quick passage of the Bill into law.
According to HAPI, the disability hill holds the potential to provide a robust framework that guarantees the rights, dignity and full inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The Executive Director of HAPI, Aver Akighir stated this during a joint press conference held in Makurdi.
The event also had in attendance varied leaders of disability groups and government representatives in the sector.
Contained in the statement, HAPI stated it’s position in conjunction with it’s strategic partner, Disability Rights Advocacy Fund (DRAF) and said the approval of the Disability Bill by the governor would foster equity and respect for people with disabilities.
It said “the landmark decision reflects the government recognition of the critical need to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in the state and country.
“We urge the Benue State House of Assembly to prioritize the disability Bill, recognizing it’s transformative impact on over 15% of the state’s population of persons with disabilities.
“Speedy enactment and implementation of Disability Law will not only align Benue with national and international standards, such as Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Act 2018, and the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and also serve as a beacon of hope for marginalized communities.
“HAPI and JONAPWD are committed to collaborating with the government, civil societies and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful passage, implementation and monitoring of this law,” it stated.
