Benue State House of Assembly has directed the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBED) to suspend the ongoing recruitment process of Primary School Teachers.
House gave the directive Thursday when Member Representing Makurdi South, Honourable Douglas Akya moved a motion to that effect during the Plenary.
It said the move became necessary because SUBEB has failed to follow the guidelines for the recruitment
“The Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) should appear before the House in plenary session on Tuesday, 17 December, 2024 at 10am to explain the circumstances surrounding the sudden introduction of those with non-professional degrees in education with cut off mark of just 25% for the same aptitude test that NCE and B.ED are to pass with 45% and 50% respectively”
The House lauded the efforts of Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia’s administration for providing employment for people of the State.
“The House commend His Excellency, Governor Hyacinth Alia for approving the employment of teachers by the State Universal Basic Education Board to revive basic education in Benue State”
Earlier, the mover of the motion , Hon. Douglas Akya Noted that sometimes in August, 2024 the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) advertised for teaching vacancies in Benue State Primary schools and the advertisement placed by the board listed Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) and Bachelors in Education (B. ED) as requirements for employment.
Hon. Akya Informed the House that in November, 2024, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) released names of successful applicants in the Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted and subsequently scheduled the applicants for screening beginning from 2nd December, 2024
He expressed concerned that the board has shortlisted graduates without qualifications in education contrary to the requirements specified in the advertisement released prio to the test conducted and failed to shortlist qualified candidates for the exercise.
“Aside the manipulative picture portrayed by this development, it goes against the Governor’s good intention to uplift standard and revamp public primary schools”
Seconding the motion, Member representing Makurdi North, Hon. Alfred Emberga called on the House to halt the SUBEB recruitment process while stressing that, the law establishing the Board does not give them the power to recruit Staff but only to monitor activities of primary and basic.
Contributing, members representing Mata, Okpokwu, Gwer, Katsina Ala west, Katsina Ala East and Tiev State Constituencies, Hon. Simon Gabo , Anthony Agom ,Peter Ipusu, Jonathan Agbedyeh and Matthew Damkor respectively, called for the suspension of the recruitment exercise as well as the Executive Chairman of Board to appear before the House to explain the shortfalls in the recruitment process.
The Speaker, Hon.Hyacinth Dajoh who presided over the Plenary asked the Clerk, Barr. Bernard Nule to communicate the resolutions of the House to the Chairman of the Board.
