The Benue State University Teaching Hospital ( BSUTH) has delivered three babies through its first In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) procedure.
The Hospital began the IVF process in April 2024 to provide members of the public access to assisted reproductive services at subsidised rate.
The Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Dr Stephen Hwande disclosed this on Thursday at a press conference held at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital BSUTH Annex in Makurdi.
According to him, the successful delivery of the babies comprising a set of twins and a single birth were recorded from two pregnancies.
Dr Hwande noted that the hospital was among few public hospitals in Nigeria that IVF and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) were conducted.
He explained that the development was in line with the Benue State government’s desire to make assisted reproductive services available and affordable to families adding that the cost charged by the hospital was the cheapest in the country.
The CMD further disclosed plans by the government to subsidised healthcare services to certified pensioners in the state where they would be exempted from certain fees such as consultation and hospitalisation costs.
While noting that the hospital was already offering subsidised services for child delivery, Dr Hwande noted that the Alia led government is poised to enhancing quality of life of the Benue masses through quality and affordable health care delivery.
He commended the state government for clearing outstanding salaries and allowances of BSUTH staff as well as facilitating the implementation of several construction projects including water works, VIP wing, intervention project among others which are current ongoing in the hospital.
He, therefore assured that the BSUTH management would leave no stone on turned including enhancing health worker – patient relationship and communication, ensuring effective and efficient service delivery to the public.
