The academic community at Benue State University (BSU) and the citizens of Benue State are in mourning following the demise of Prof. Tyotom Aloysius Pasca Keghku, a renowned lecturer and Acting Head of the Department of Mass Communication. Prof. Keghku passed away on April 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in education and community service.
Born on July 2, 1959, in Igbor, Gwer Local Government Area, Prof. Keghku was distinguished by his academic excellence and commitment to public service. His educational journey took him from RCM Dedere-Lafia Primary School to Government Secondary School, Lafia, and later to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, the College of Journalism in Fleet Street, London, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Prof. Keghku’s professional career spanned several decades, with roles as a Cultural Assistant, Director of Public Relations, and Director of Operations. He also served as a consultant for various organizations, including the National Council on Privatization and DFID’s State and Local Government Program. In 2008, he joined BSU as a Lecturer I and later became the Acting Head of the Mass Communication Department.
As a dedicated educator, Prof. Keghku mentored numerous students, many of whom have achieved success in various fields. He was also a prolific writer, contributing to publications and serving as an Editorial Adviser for ONTIV International Magazine since 2004
.Beyond his academic pursuits, Prof. Keghku was actively involved in community initiatives, participating in organizations such as the Yima Utoo Foundation and the NYGON Educational Foundation. His leadership role as Chairman of the Central Church Council at St. Michael’s Church highlighted his commitment to his faith and community.
In recognition of his significant contributions to mass communication and advertising ethics, Prof. Keghku was a respected member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations Governing Council since 2001.
To honor Prof. Keghku’s life and legacy, BSU has announced plans for a memorial service, which will bring together academics, students, and community leaders. The Mass Communication Department is establishing a scholarship fund in his name to support students pursuing careers in advertising and media studies.
Prof. Keghku is survived by his wife, Mercy, their two sons, and one daughter, as well as the countless students whose lives he touched through his guidance and mentorship. His family has expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community and has requested privacy during this challenging time.
