Prolonged power outage in Logo 1 leaves residents in distress

By Atime Clara Mule

Residents of Logo 1, Makurdi, are grappling with a prolonged power outage that has left homes and businesses in darkness for several days. The power failure, attributed to an unspecified technical fault, has caused widespread frustration among citizens, with many calling for urgent intervention from the Jos Electricity Distribution (JED).

The blackout has paralyzed economic activities, disrupted daily life, and heightened concerns over security in the area. Businesses, especially those that depend on electricity, are experiencing heavy financial losses.

Traders and artisans who rely on electricity for their livelihoods are struggling to cope with the situation. Many have been forced to close their businesses or operate at a loss due to high fuel costs. Cold-room operators who sell frozen foods have suffered major losses as perishable goods spoil due to the lack of refrigeration.

For many families, the lack of electricity has made daily life unbearable. Parents with young children struggle to keep their homes comfortable, especially at night when temperatures are high. Some residents have resorted to using candles and kerosene lamps, increasing the risk of fire hazards.

The lack of streetlights in the area has made it difficult to move around safely at night, and some residents claim that cases of theft and burglary have increased since the power outage began.

Responding, an official from JED, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the power outage was due to a faulty transformer affecting the entire area. The official assured that JED’s engineers are working to resolve the issue and restore power as soon as possible.

A Community leader, Chief Paul Akaa, urged the authorities to find a lasting solution to the power outage issue. He suggested that the government should look into alternative energy sources to reduce reliance on the national grid.
