The Benue State Football Association (BSFA) has issued a statement in response to recent criticisms circulating on social media. The critics, in an opinion piece titled “Lobi Stars: Alia Must Learn from Past Mistakes and Break this Vicious Circle,” had questioned the appointment of Dr. Philip Nongu and the involvement of BSFA in Lobi Stars’ board.
The BSFA media team countered that the critics’ assertions are rooted in personal vendettas and speculative narratives rather than facts and objectivity. They emphasized that state football associations are statutorily linked to clubs under their jurisdiction and are mandated to contribute to football development and provide oversight.
Regarding the appointment of Coach Bulus, the BSFA clarified that hiring a coach is a board decision and that it is unfair to suggest that the FA Chairman single-handedly imposed the coach on Lobi Stars. The statement also described as baseless accusations of “cupboard love” and “hustling” against the FA Chairman, which serve only to distract from the real issues at hand.
The BSFA also noted that comparing Lobi Stars to Benue Queens is misleading, as each football club faces distinct challenges. While Benue Queens may have experienced setbacks, it has also achieved notable milestones under the same leadership. The BSFA emphasized that development is a gradual process, not an overnight phenomenon, contrary to the critics’ expectations.
Furthermore, the association highlighted that having connections with national football leadership is an asset, not a liability. If Barr. Edeh has established relationships with key figures like the NFF President, these connections should be leveraged for the benefit of Benue State’s football community. This, the BSFA argued, is how modern sports administration thrives, rather than being fueled by suspicion.
The BSFA also clarified that there is currently no official confirmation of Barr. Edeh’s alleged plans to become the next Lobi Stars Chairman. Even if such an ambition existed, the association noted that there are established guidelines and processes governing such appointments, and speculation should not be conflated with fact.
Additionally, the BSFA disputed the claim that a State FA Chairman cannot simultaneously hold the position of club chairman, stating that this is a matter of governance choice rather than a constitutional prohibition.
The BSFA highlighted the achievements of Barr. Paul Edeh’s leadership, including the revival of grassroots competitions and the upgrade of McCarthy Stadium. They called for constructive criticism and urged the writer of the piece to focus on building rather than burning.
The statement which was issued Wednesday in Makurdi, concluded by describing Governor Hyacinth Alia as a discerning leader who is guided by a vision to reposition sports in Benue. The BSFA urged genuine football lovers to channel their energies into supporting Lobi Stars with unity, facts, and a shared commitment to success.
