The Petroleum, Environment, and Solid Minerals Degradation Awareness Association (PESMDAA) has inaugurated a task force to raise awareness about illegal mining activities in Benue State. The association aims to tackle environmental degradation, promote sustainable development, and create employment opportunities for youths.
Speaking during the inauguration Thursday at the College of Health Sciences, Benue State University, Makurdi, Ambassador James Ugah, Chairman of PESMDAA, emphasized the need for collective action and collaboration among government, communities, and stakeholders.
He stressed that protecting natural resources is non-negotiable and assured that the association will work with the state’s revenue generating body to expand the government’s revenue base through new initiatives.

Ugah also revealed plans to partner with international organizations to combat illegal mining and generate new revenue streams for the state. Goodwill messages from various stakeholders praised the formation of PESMDAA, noting that while the government has taken steps to curb illegal mining, widespread awareness and grassroots participation are crucial for lasting solutions.
The inauguration ceremony, which was attended by government officials, industry leaders, community representatives, and stakeholders, marked a significant step towards fostering environmental responsibility, economic prosperity, and youth empowerment in the state’s natural resources sector.
A total of 752 individuals were inaugurated into various roles, including state, local government, and ward executives, as well as field operation officers. The PESMDAA state EXCOs inauguration was simultaneously conducted across all 36 states in Nigeria.
