The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State Council has called on the Alia led government to activate the anti-cultism law as a means to curb cultism in the state. This is coming on the heels of recent cult activities in the state which led to heavy bloodshed over weekend.
The union expressed concern that while the state is grappling with the security challenges posed by herder-farmer clashes, cult-related activities are increasingly becoming a significant internal security threat
While commending government’s effort over security measures taken to protect lives and properties in the state, it urged various security agencies to take decisive action to restore peace and sanity.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its congress on Tuesday, the union extended its deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in the recent violence
The union further urged the Benue State government to give preference to resident journalists in the state for all media engagements.
The communique noted that two years into the Alia-led administration, local media professionals have not been sufficiently incorporated in the state’s communications strategy.
The Congress further expressed concern over the rising cost of rent in Benue, appealing to landlords, landladies, and housing agents to be considerate of tenants, particularly given the state is predominantly civil service population.
With the rainy season in full swing, the NUJ called on residents to improve sanitation practices, including clearing drainages and avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal, to prevent flooding and related hazards.
On social media conduct, the NUJ appealed to users to refrain from insulting public officials and urged employers to monitor and caution their staff to promote peace and harmony across the state.
The NUJ Benue State Congress also expressed a strong vote of confidence in the State Working Committee led by Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, encouraging them to maintain their dedication and good work.
The communiqué was drafted by a committee chaired by Faith Terdoo Igbudu, with Doris M. Yuwa as Secretary and Timothy Ihom as Member.
