Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has approved the payment of one-month salary arrears owed to civil servants since 2017 by the previous administration. This decision follows appeals from the leadership of organized labor in the state, who urged him to clear the backlog of arrears during the 2025 May Day celebration in Makurdi.
Governor Alia, who was honored with a march past by various unions, expressed his delight in being part of the celebration. He acknowledged the daily sacrifices and contributions of workers, saying, “Your daily sacrifices and contributions have continued to support our state and drive our progress forward. I am confident that the expectation of one month salary arrears will be met.”
The Governor also highlighted the government’s efforts to motivate workers, including the renovation and modernization of critical government facilities. He assured that these renovations are a testament to his administration’s commitment to improving the state.
While condoling with the people of Benue who have lost loved ones and properties due to insecurity, Governor Alia pledged to work tirelessly to address the challenge and facilitate the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (Benue State chapter), Comrade Terungwa Igbe, commended Governor Alia for prioritizing the welfare of workers, particularly the implementation and payment of the new minimum wage. He pledged the total support of workers for the Alia-led administration.
