May Day: TUC calls for review of retirement age, payment of 2017 arrears

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria, Benue State Chapter, has urged the Benue State Government to review the retirement age upwards and settle the 2017 salary arrears owed to civil servants.

This call was made on May 1, 2025, by the State Chairman of TUC, Comrade Gideon Akaa, during the Workers’ Day Celebration with the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space Amidst Economic Hardships.”

Comrade Akaa advocated for an upward review of the retirement age from 65 years or 40 years of service, currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges. He also demanded the clearance of 2017 arrears, implementation of wage awards, restoration of leave grants, provision of work materials, and a TUC secretariat.

The TUC Chairman reaffirmed the organization’s loyalty and collective resolve to ensure the growth and development of Benue State. He emphasized the importance of a vibrant civic space for a healthy democracy and collective progress, lamenting the struggles of Nigerian workers in affording basic necessities.

“We affirm that silence is no longer an option. It is within our rights to engage in public discourse, demand accountability, and participate actively in decision-making. A vibrant civic space is critical for a healthy democracy and our collective progress”, he maintained.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Selumum Deborah Abe, assured workers of his commitment to their welfare and commended them for their hard work. He pledged to look into the TUC’s demands for better working conditions.

The Executive Secretary of the Teaching Service Board, Mr. Tsea Ahule, commended the Governor for prompt salary payments and appreciated workers for their diligence, urging them to support the Governor’s administration.

The event featured a march past by various trade unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations (SSASCGOC) among others.
