The Berom-speaking people of northern Plateau State have called on ethnic groups to respect and involve women in traditional affairs, citing the potential benefits for economic development.
The Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, paramount ruler of the Berom people and Chairman of the Traditional Council of Chiefs and Emirs in Plateau State, made the call during the annual Nzem Berom cultural festival in Jos on Friday.
The Paramount ruler, a retired Controller General of Customs, emphasized that providing opportunities for women would unlock their potential in various aspects, driving economic growth. He encouraged other tribes to involve women in traditional affairs, highlighting the importance of collective effort in addressing global challenges.
Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, praised the Berom people for their unique qualities, work ethic, and cultural richness. He urged Plateau tribes to unite, celebrate their diversity while working towards a better state. The Governor assured citizens of his administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment.
Sen. Simon Mwadakon, Chairman of the 2025 Nzem Berom festival, expressed his gratitude to the Paramount ruler and the Berom people for entrusting him to lead the event for the second time. He described Nzem Berom as an annual celebration that brings together Berom-speaking people to pray for the success of their natives, particularly farmers, and to seek a blessed farming season and bountiful harvest.
However, Sen. Mwadakon lamented the persistent attacks and displacement of Berom people, which have hindered economic and social activities. Despite these challenges, he highlighted the significance of the festival in uniting Berom-speaking people, both at home and in the diaspora, to discuss common issues and showcase their rich culture and talent to the world.
The festival, held at Polo Field in Jos, featured various cultural displays, including traditional dances, attire, and native dishes. The event was conducted under tight security measures to ensure a peaceful celebration.
