…As President rejects reversal call
Hundreds of members of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) District Church Council (DCC) in Kano State have protested the church’s decision to split their DCC into two.
The protesters, who gathered at the ECWA headquarters on Monday in Jos, Plateau State, expressed their discontent with the decision made at the 72nd General Church Council meeting.
According to the leader of the protesters, Mr. Isah Sule Maigona, the decision contravenes the ECWA constitution. The group claimed that the matter is already in court, with a High Court in Kano issuing a restraining order against the ECWA executives. The protesters vowed not to relent until the church reverses its decision and allows the Kano DCC to remain intact.
The protesters are demanding that the ECWA revert its decision to split the Kano DCC into two, allowing the council to remain as one. They argue that the decision is unconstitutional and that the church should respect the court’s ruling.
However, ECWA President Rev. Dr. Job Ayuba Bagat has rejected the protesters’ demands, stating that the decision of the General Church Council, which comprises over 2,000 delegates, is final and binding.
He argued that the protesters have disrespected the denomination by taking the matter to court, which he believes violates ECWA principles and the biblical injunction.
Rev Dr. Bagat emphasized that reversing the decision would require a significant process, including another General Church Council meeting, particularly since the matter has lingered for over seven years.
The protesters occupied the entrance for hours, blocking the exit of ECWA officials and seemingly ready for a violent confrontation.
The situation was brought under control by security operatives deployed to the ECWA headquarters, who prevented the protesters from escalating the situation.
