Owners of gas stations in Makurdi are lamenting the recent collapse in gas prices nationwide, attributed to the consistent influx of liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes exceeding seasonal averages.
In Makurdi, the price of a kilogram of gas has plummeted from ₦1,500 in January 2025 to ₦1,250 currently, representing a ₦250 (16.7%) drop. Gas station owners are grappling with reduced revenue and potential losses, forcing them to make tough decisions.
In an interview, Festus Ogbonaya, owner of Harmony Gas Station, stated that, “the price collapse has led to reduced revenue and potentially even losses, leaving us with difficult decisions about whether to cut costs or temporarily shut down operations.”
Matthew Tochukwu, manager of Austoma Gas Station, echoed similar sentiments, saying his business, which had been struggling to stay afloat, was now facing even greater challenges due to the new gas rate. He lamented that many gas plant owners were being forced to make tough decisions to remain in business or exit.
However, small business owners like Miss Ene Obaje, a roadside food vendor, are benefiting from the price drop. She expressed delight at the reduced price, stating that her business relies heavily on natural gas for heating and cooking. The new price has brought significant relief, enabling her to focus on growing her business.
