The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and State Emergency Management Agency BSEMA, Sir James Iorpuu, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting displaced and vulnerable populations affected by conflicts across the state.
He made this disclosure on Thursday at the agency’s headquarters in Makurdi during the distribution of food and non-food items to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable groups. He highlighted the state’s preparedness to address humanitarian challenges.
The distribution, which commenced at the Mbayongo mega camp and Apa Local Government Area, included 1,325 bags of rice, 965 bags of beans, and other essential items. Represented by the Head of Administration, Benue SEMA, Dr. Donald Komgbenda, Iorpuu attributed the initiative to the state government’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of displaced individuals.
Iorpuu expressed gratitude to Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia for addressing humanitarian and security challenges and commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for proactive measures to restore peace in the state.
Regarding recent attacks, Iorpuu disclosed that a camp had been established in NKST Primary School, Naka, accommodating 18,000 individuals. The agency is also making arrangements for displaced people in Aondona, Gwer West.
Iorpuu appealed for continued support from partners and stakeholders to restore dignity and facilitate the resettlement of displaced persons.
He drew attention to a serious flood alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), warning residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer grounds. BSEMA promises to continue sensitizing the public and developing contingency plans.
