The Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, has flagged off the 2025 1st Round Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Week, as well as the National Immunization Plus Days across the state. The flag-off ceremony took place at the Sen. Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre, Old Airport Road, Minna, on Monday.
The governor, represented by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, emphasized that good nutrition is crucial for ensuring healthier lives, stronger communities, and a productive state. He stated that the campaigns on nutrition and immunization align with the New Niger agenda and are critical to reducing morbidity and mortality rates in the state.
Although malnutrition, particularly among children and women, poses challenges, the governor assured that the present administration is committed to addressing them head-on to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He highlighted substantial investments made through reforms, policies, and projects aimed at transforming the healthcare system in the state.
He appreciated development partners and donor agencies for their technical and financial support in nutrition and healthcare delivery systems. He urged mothers, caregivers, and community leaders to take advantage of the activities lined up for the Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Week.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, explained that the program aims to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in the state. He disclosed that the Ministry would provide free medical services, including malnutrition screening, antenatal care, and routine immunization.
Representatives of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, World Health Organisation, and UNICEF commended the state government’s efforts toward protecting the health and future of children and women. They pledged their continued support and collaboration with the state government.
