Christians have been urged to shift their focus from the pursuit of physical desires such as money, food, and material things to serving the Lord. This message was delivered by Rev. Sesugh Nongo, an associate pastor at NKST (Universal Reformed Christian Church) Iortyer, during a Sunday worship service marking the end of the monthly conference for July.
The service, which was held at the Church Auditorium, also witnessed the presentation of a three million naira appeal fund by the Sunday School (MIM) to offset hire purchase liability and fueling of their bus. The theme of the service was “Making the Best Use of the Time, Because the Days Are Evil.”
Reading from Acts 6:2-4, Rev. Nongo, who is also the superintendent of choir in the Iortyer-classis, challenged the congregation to emulate the Apostles, who devoted their time to prayer and the ministry of the Lord. He lamented the lack of commitment to God’s service today and called on backsliding Christians to rededicate themselves to God.
“As Christians, we ought to be committed to serving the Lord at all times, and this should reflect in our movements, conversations, and actions,” Rev. Nongo stressed.
“Serving God is not only in our convenient times alone; we have to take risks and remember that Jesus himself would always let the will of God be done, not his own will.”
He further emphasized the importance of being vigilant and awake, citing Mark 13:33-37, and encouraged Christians to take a bold decision to actively connect with God. “Let us not let the opportunity that we have now as living beings pass us by. Let us always be on alert to receive our salvation anytime, like the condemned criminal on the cross in Luke 23:39-43. Stop procrastinating and take a bold decision to actively connect with God now that you are alive, for He is ready for you to call on Him and draw near, as Isaiah says in chapter 55:6.”
The cleric assured the congregation that serving God is for their own good and that nothing should stand in their way. “Nothing is worth standing on your way to serving God,” he said, urging Christians to prioritize their relationship with God.
