The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, has commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her recent visit to the state and the donation of ₦1 billion to support the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The commendation was part of a communiqué issued at the end of the council’s congress held in Makurdi on Wednesday, under the leadership of its Chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber. The congress, attended by notable personalities including the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication, Hon. Solomon Iorpev; former member of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bem Mngutyo; and media elder, Terzungwe Uwua, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her compassionate gesture towards displaced communities in the state.
According to the communiqué signed by the Drafting Committee Chairman, Tamenor Kwaghzer, and Secretary, Paul Ikyungun, the union passed a unanimous resolution expressing a vote of confidence in Hon. Iorpev for his unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of the NUJ, as well as his exceptional performance in discharging his duties on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration.
While encouraging journalists in the state to uphold professionalism in their reportage, the union emphasized the importance of ethical standards in strengthening the credibility of the press and safeguarding democratic values. The NUJ also applauded Governor Alia for his efforts in infrastructural development across the state.
However, it urged the government to intensify efforts to complete ongoing projects and specifically called for the immediate mobilization of contractors handling the Agber-Kighir township road to site.
Concerned about the welfare of media professionals, the congress appealed to the state government to improve the working conditions of staff at state-owned media houses, including Radio Benue, The Voice Newspaper, and Benue Television Corporation.
The union also called on security agencies to step up efforts in protecting lives and property amid persistent insecurity across the state.
