Food prices have dropped significantly in Makurdi and other parts of Benue State, bringing relief to both consumers and traders. Reports from major markets indicates that the prices of staple foods such as rice, beans, and vegetables have fallen by up to 30% over the past month.
Traders and agricultural experts have attributed this development to the recent government’s agricultural policies aimed at boosting food production and reducing reliance on imports.
According to Mr. Ugande Stephen, a local economist, “The government’s efforts to support local farmers and improve agricultural infrastructure have really paid off. We’re seeing a significant increase in food production, which is driving down prices and making food more affordable for Nigerians.”
The price reduction reportedly began about six weeks ago, shortly after the government rolled out new initiatives, including subsidies for farmers, improved irrigation systems, and increased investment in agricultural research. These measures have not only boosted food production but have also improved the quality of produce.
Mr. Attah Joseph, a trader at Wurukum Market confirmed this impact saying, “The quality of the produce is much better now, and the prices are lower. It’s a win-win for everyone. I can now afford to buy more produce and sell it at a lower price to my customers.”
Farmers have also expressed their satisfaction with the government’s support. Miss. Akuma Kadoom, a rice farmer noted that, “The government’s subsidies have really helped us. We can now afford to buy better seeds, fertilizers, and equipment, which has increased our yields and improved the quality of our produce.”
For consumers, the falling prices are a welcome relief amid rising living costs. Miss. Agba Ruth, a Makurdi resident, shared her joy saying, “I’m so happy about the price drop. I can now afford to buy more food for my family without breaking the bank. It’s a big relief for us.”
Experts have predicted that food prices could remain stable or even drop further in the coming months. Mr. Daniel Adma , a market analyst explained that, “The price drop is as a result of a combination of factors, including the government’s initiatives, favorable weather conditions, and increased competition in the market. We expect the prices to remain stable or even decrease further in the coming months.”
With food prices on a downward trend, both traders and consumers hope the government’s agricultural policies will continue to support local production and ensure long-term food affordability.
