The Federal Government has launched the distribution of 3500 life jackets to 12 selected states, including Niger State, as part of its efforts to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians who rely on inland waterways for transportation and commerce.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, flagged off the event on Tuesday at the Government House in Minna, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the rising incidence of boat mishaps on Nigeria’s waterways.
The Minister acknowledged the economic potential of the waterways, which has been hindered by safety concerns. He commended Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, for his efforts in improving riverine transportation within the state and urged other state governors and community leaders to follow his example.
In his keynote address, Governor Bago announced that the state government, in collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and other stakeholders, will implement the mandatory use of life jackets and adherence to waterways safety regulations.
He expressed concern over the alarming rate of boat mishaps in the state and revealed that the state government has identified the root causes of these incidents and is determined to address them through enforcement, education, and investment in waterways.
The Managing Director/CEO of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji, highlighted the need for stronger collaboration with partners to stem the tide of boat mishaps on waterways. The Commissioner for Transport, Hajiya Hadiza Idris Kuta, appreciated the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for its support, including the provision of ambulances, passenger boats, and water marshals.
The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Abubakar Yahaya, represented by the Wambai Nupe, Engr. Ndagi Aliyu, emphasized the importance of traditional institutions in promoting waterways safety and urged them to sensitize their people on the need for adherence to safety measures.
