Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has inaugurated a 21-member State Boundary Committee, led by the Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, to resolve boundary issues affecting the state’s 25 Local Government Areas.
While inaugurating the committee during the State Executive Council meeting Monday at Government House Minna, the Governor emphasized that the committee’s mandate is crucial for ensuring peaceful coexistence among residents, both now and for future generations.
Acknowledging the state’s security challenges and inter-communal clashes, Governor Umaru Bago emphasized the crucial role of traditional institutions in ensuring the committee’s success. He expressed the state government’s reliance on the royal fathers to facilitate a smooth process.
Governor Bago urged the Committee to prioritize inter-emirate boundary issues as their initial focus, followed by intra-communal boundary disputes, with the ultimate goal of clearly defining boundaries for gazetting by the government.
The Governor assured the committee of the government’s unwavering support, including security and logistics, to enable them to complete their work effectively. He also encouraged committee members to reach out to him directly whenever necessary.
He directed the Committee to submit its report within six months, with the option to extend the deadline if necessary.
Other members of the committee include Yahaya Abubakar, Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers; Mu’azu Barau, Emir of Kontagora; Emir of Borgu, Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV
Others are Emir of Minna, Alh. Umar Faruk Bahago; Emir of Suleja, Mal. Muhammad Awwalk; Emir of Lapai, Umar Tafida Bago; Emir of Agaie, Yusuf Nuhu; Emir of Kagara, Ahmad Garba Gunna.
The committee also comprises representatives from each zone, including Habiba Ahmad (Zone B), a retired Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Lands, Abdullahi Danjuma Adamu (Zone C); and Surveyor Kudu Nagya (Zone A).
The Surveyor General, Ministry of Lands and Survey will serve as the Committee’s Secretary. Other members include Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Maurice Magaji; Commissioner for Information, Binta Mamman; Commissioner for Local Government, Hamidu Jantabo; State Attorney General, Nasiru Mu’azu; Commissioner of Police for Niger State Command, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman; Director of DSS; and Comptroller of Immigration.
The governor’s initiative aims to promote peace and stability in the state by resolving boundary disputes and ensuring clear demarcations.
