Governor of Plateau State, Barr Caleb Mutfwang, has announced that a technical committee set up to verify mining companies in the state has cleared 159 companies to mine solid minerals.
“I am pleased to inform you that the Committee has made significant progress. After thorough screening and verification, 159 companies have been cleared to resume operations,” Governor Mutfwang said during a press briefing at his official residence on Friday in Jos.
According to the governor, the cleared companies include: 6 Mining Licenses, 15 Small Scale Mining Leases, 15 Exploration Licences, 5 Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Permits, 1 Quarry Lease and 118 Tin Sheds/Buying Centers.
Although the suspension of mining activities in the state through Executive Order 001 remains in effect, the governor emphasized the importance of solid minerals in revenue generation.
“I am fully aware that Plateau State has been a cornerstone of Nigeria’s mining history since 1902. The emergence of large-scale mining on the Plateau served as a catalyst for economic growth, industrial development, job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and infrastructural expansion,” he said.
Governor Mutfwang warned parents against allowing underage children to engage in mining activities, stating that any child found at a mining site would be arrested along with their parent or guardian and sanctioned accordingly.
The governor reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the mining industry, announcing the approval of a Gemstone Skills Acquisition Centre sponsored by the Plateau State Government.
“This initiative will train and empower our teeming youths, particularly our indigenous population, with the skills and necessary support needed to thrive in a modern mining sector,” he added.
