… Assures of justice for victims
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has described the recent attack on Yelewata Community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State as a senseless and tragic assault, not only on Benue State but on the sovereignty and integrity of Nigeria.
IGP Egbetokun stated this Monday during his working visit to the state for a first hand assessment following the recent brutal attacks that have left scores dead with several others displaced.
According to him, the visit was part of the Force’s decisive move geared towards addressing the worsening security situation in Benue State.
Speaking when he met with Governor Hyacinth Alia at the Old Banquet Hall of Government House to commiserate with the Government and people of Benue over the tragedy, the IGP said, “Your Excellency, I am in Benue State today to commiserate with you on the sad incident of the tragic attack on Yelewata community.
“On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), I extend our deepest condolences to you, Your Excellency, your Government, the bereaved families, and all citizens affected by this attack. I want to assure you that we are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and to restoring lasting peace to Benue State.”
The IGP noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was deeply saddened by the news of the attack and remains determined to end the reign of impunity by criminal gangs and terror elements across the country.
“These mindless acts of terror are not just attacks on Benue State; they are attacks on our nation. An attack on any community in Nigeria is an attack on the entire country,” he declared, promising sustained collaboration with the State Government and other security agencies to ensure the protection of lives and property.
Responding, Governor Alia expressed deep appreciation for the IGP’s prompt visit and the continuous support of the Nigeria Police Force.
“We are bleeding, we are in sorrow. Your visit has uplifted our spirits and assured us that we are not alone in this journey. We are grateful for the swift responses we have always received whenever we call on you. The various squads and units you deployed have been quite supportive in our fight against insurgency in the state.”
The Governor while highlighting the progress made in curbing violence since the inception of his administration, recalled that 17 local government areas were under persistent attacks at the start of his tenure, a figure that had been significantly reduced through joint efforts with security agencies before the recent resurgence of violence.
Both the IGP and the Governor reaffirmed their commitment to working closely together, along with the Federal Government, to bring lasting peace and security to Benue communities.
As part of his visit, the IGP was to tour Yelewata to assess the situation firsthand and further put in place more security measures in the area.
Recall that on Friday, June 13, suspected armed herders launched a violent attack on Yelewata Community burning houses and killing scores of innocent residents, including women and children.
