Governors of the North Central geopolitical zone have resolved to embark on joint security operations to address insecurity in the region.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State who doubles as the Chairman of the North Central Governors’ Forum, disclosed this during an expanded State Security Council meeting held at the Nasarawa State Government House on Tuesday.
He said the decision was reached after series of meetings of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Northern Governors’ Forum, where security issues were extensively discussed with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa in attendance.
Governor Sule explained that the joint operations would target areas such as Wamba, Bokkos, and border areas between Nasarawa , Benue and Kogi States.
“We came up with the ideas of some kind of joint efforts where we are going to look at the Wamba, Bokkos axis because it has remained a flash point,” he stated.
The Governor emphasised the need for proactive measures, noting that bandits and terrorists might flee from heightened military operations in Borno and Northwestern states to Nasarawa State.
“We are also aware that most of these criminals would run into Nasarawa State, and it is better for us to sit down and be proactive rather than wait until something happens,” he said.
Governor Sule cited recent instances of bandits converging in Sardauna Forest and Farin Tsauni, assuring that his administration and North Central governors are monitoring the situation.
He commended security agencies for their efforts in addressing recent incidents of kidnapping in Lafia, Kokona, Doma, Nasarawa-Eggon, and Wamba.
The Governor therefore urged security agencies to ensure that arrested suspects are properly investigated and prosecuted.
“I urge you to ensure that none of those arrested are released until they are properly investigated and prosecuted so that we don’t continue to see such bad eggs on the streets,” he said.
The Governor expressed gratitude to traditional rulers, community leaders, and youths for their support, which he noted has contributed to the prevailing peace and security in the state.
He also appreciated the recent return of the Bassa people to their ancestral abode in Toto Local Government Area.
Earlier, Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Barr Labaran Magaji, commended Governor Sule for his dedication to peace and security, noting that it has earned recognition within and outside the state.
“Your Excellency’s directive to convene the security council, based on the security report at your disposal, underscores your commitment to addressing security challenges,” he said.
