The Niger State House of Assembly has passed the Niger State Sports Commission Bill, 2024, into law. The bill’s passage followed the presentation of the Standing Committee on Sports Development’s report during plenary on Tuesday
The Chairman of the committee, Hon. Zakari Ndagi Kimbokun, stated that the committee engaged various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ministry of Justice, and Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), to gather input.
After thorough deliberations, the committee recommended the bill’s passage, citing its potential to enhance sports development, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in the state.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, commended the committee for their thorough work, leading to the bill’s swift passage.
The bill’s originator, Danjuma Abdul Masu, a sports enthusiast, expressed gratitude to stakeholders, including the immediate past governor, Sen. Abubakar Sani Bello, for their support. Masu noted that the commission will bring autonomy to sports, allowing for direct linkage with the governor and encouraging private sector participation.
The new law aims to overhaul the sports sector, promoting transparency, accountability, and funding from diverse sources. With this development, Niger State is poised to experience significant growth and development in its sports industry.
