As the world marks this year’s Children’s Day across the globe, the immediate past member of the House of Representatives for Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos, said the day is worth celebrating due to its importance to the development of future leaders.
Hon. Bagos commended the role played by teachers in molding good characters of persons who will lead various segments of society in the near future. Hon. Bagos urged pupils and students to be serious with their studies to enable them to become responsible citizens of Nigeria. The former national legislator noted that the idea was to prepare children for leadership roles and encouraged them to exhibit good behavior.
Also Speaking on Tuesday at a Children’s Day event held in Jos, the Plateau State capital, the Director of Legal Services of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, Barr. Juliet Gwaiviang, said the event is apt and an opportunity to speak directly to children. Barr. Gwaiviang noted with sadness that there are numerous reported cases of child molestation, sexual harassment, and child trafficking in the state, even between teachers and students.
The gender commission legal officer encouraged the children to report any act of violence against them and anything that is inimical to their development. She commended Dachung Musa Bagos’ foundation for organizing the program and tasked teachers and school managers to protect children against all harm, particularly the girl child. Parents and caregivers were also told to prioritize education and the social well-being of their children.
The pupils and students who participated in the program were drawn from 20 public schools within Jos South, Bassa, Jos North, Riyom, and Barkin Ladi local government areas. The former lawmaker donated N100,000 to each school authority to assist those who cannot pay school fees and other charges. The students were given school bags, exercise books, and other writing materials. The event was organized by the lawmaker’s foundation, championing the well-being of humanity, particularly the most vulnerable in society.
