The Benue State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Hon Itodo Idoko has attributed the current defections of high profile politicians to the party to the realisation of the party’s potentials to reposition the country.
Hon Idoko stated this in an interview with The Voice Politics on Wednesday.
He said “people are beginning to see the good things SDP can offer. As one of the oldest parties in the country, SDP knows the problems of Nigerians and how to solve them. It is a party that believes in grassroots development and the unity of Nigeria.”
According to him, the other parties have failed the people in terms of development programs and policies but that, SDP is coming to reposition the country for development.
He said however that anytime the party has plans to receive people, as its doors are open to everybody who wishes to join SDP, the party will let the public to know.
After all, “Party activities as high as defection cannot be hidden”.
“For now, we don’t have such plans. We are not negotiating with any government officials to join SDP. But if any of them finds SDP a better home, we will welcome him or her with our hands wide open. SDP is a party of choice, it is a party for the right people”, he said.
The Chairman carpeted those alleging that the newly acquired Secretariat of the party in the State has been deserted since inauguration in Makurdi saying such insinuations are baseless.
“Party activities have been going on since then. Our secretariat is always open for activities. Except you didn’t visit the place. But you should understand that elections are over and the new governments inaugurated in Benue State and Nigeria. So you don’t expect the same campaign activities to continue.
“Campaign periods are periods with highest activities. But now we meet as party leaders and reach out to our followers and members from time to time”.
According to him, SDP is a party that believes in grassroots development and the unity of Nigeria.
“People are not just coming to SDP because they were rejected in their political parties but people are coming to SDP because they now realise that SDP is a good and formidable party that is united for the sake of the country.
“All those who have defected already and those who are yet to come are welcome to the party. El-Rufai was a former governor and of course, a former minister of the federal republic. So his coming to SDP is a plus for the party. I believe that he will bring in more of his colleagues so that we can collectively make Nigeria better.
Hon Idoko distanced the party from the ongoing tribunal cases regarding the last local government elections in the State saying, “as a party, we are not in court”.
That’s great news and we are doing our best at grassroots to ensure sdp win all future election
