Niger State Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, has assured the people of Mokwa Local Government Area that the state government will work tirelessly to ensure everyone’s safety.
The Deputy Governor stated this during a sympathy visit to Mokwa following the devastating flood that claimed several lives and properties on Friday.
The affected areas were Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town, Mokwa Local Government Area of the state. The Deputy Governor described the incident as saddening, heartbreaking, and pathetic, especially with the resultant loss of many lives and properties. He prayed that Allah grant the deceased Aljanna Firdausi and grant quick recovery to the injured.
He then cautioned individuals to stop building on waterways to avoid recurrence, stating that while this is a natural disaster, they should take it in good faith.
The Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, who said they had been on the ground since yesterday, equally sympathized with the victims. She said the first intervention they gave was in the areas of clearing debris and search and rescue, disclosing that over one hundred lives were lost, with several people rendered homeless.
The NEMA Boss also asked people to stay clear of waterways for the safety of their lives and properties, disclosing that they had brought some food and non-food items for the victims to cushion the effects of the disaster.
Speaking to one of the victims, Anas Usman, said 17 members of his household lost their lives to the disaster, saying the flood came on Thursday morning after a heavy downpour on Wednesday night.
